RCA Secret returns with little works of art
RCA Secret, the Royal College of Art’s annual show and sale, is back with over 2,000 works by some of the world’s most celebrated artists and designers, as well as by promising students from the College.
A staple since 1994, the eagerly awaited sale ups the ante by selling artworks anonymously at a flat price of £55. The identity of the artist is only revealed once sold.
Since previous contributors have included David Bailey, Peter Blake, Jake Chapman, Maggi Hambling, Thomas Heatherwick, Anish Kapoor, Steve McQueen, Grayson Perry, Zandra Rhodes and Yinka Shonibare - well, you can see what the fuss is about.
Although restricted to being postcard sized, every piece is an original artwork, produced with the same rigour as any other work by the maker. Subject matter and approaches vary widely, from photography and collage, to drawing, painting, and even sculpture and embroidery.
All profits go towards the RCA Student Award Fund, which helps emerging artists by funding scholarships to the College.
“The annual RCA Secret exhibition is a unique art-world moment when a small part of the global contemporary art market is made accessible to all,” says Dr Paul Thompson, Rector RCA. “Each year RCA Secret helps to provide opportunities to the emerging artists and designers of the future, who – as students – are often stretched to their limits financially.”
